Masteel UK specializes in worldwide distribution of high-quality steels for the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors. Our range of steels cover a large number of different steel grades and classes.

This blog post will specifically look at two chromium molybdenum steel specifications; ASTM A387 Grade 11 Class 2 and ASME SA387 Grade 11 Class 2.

What is the Difference Between ASTM and ASME?

Before we outline what these specifications cover it is important to know the difference between the two standard publishers. ASME is the American Society for Mechanical Engineers while ASTM is the American Society for Testing and Materials.

While the standards discussed in this blog post may come from different publishers they are the equivalent of each other and cover the same specifications.

What Does ASTM A387 Grade 11 Class 2 and ASME SA387 Grade 11 Class 2 Cover?

These specifications cover chrome moly steel alloy plates that are used specifically for pressure vessels and welded boilers that operate under elevated temperatures. Other applications for steel plates that come under these specifications include heat exchangers and pipework.

This grade has a nominal chromium content of 1.25% and nominal molybdenum content of 0.50%, and the high levels of chromium provide the steel with outstanding oxidation and corrosion resistance.

The class denotes the tensile strength required by a steel plate to meet this specification. ASTM A387 Grade 11 Class 2 and ASME SA387 Grade 11 Class 2 require a tensile strength of 75 to 100 ksi (515 to 690 MPA) with a minimum yield strength of 43 ksi (310 MPA).

The maximum thickness of these steel plates is only limited by the capacity of the composition to meet the mechanical property specifications required.

ASTM A387 Grade 11 Class 2 and ASME SA387 Grade 11 Class 2 from Masteel

Masteel stocks a wide range of steel plates that are ASTM A387 Grade 11 Class 2 and ASME SA387 Grade 11 Class 2 certified.

All plates are pre-tested to rigorous standards, and we can arrange third party testing if more specific testing is required.

Our steel plates are sources from steel mills in Western Europe and we are able to ship our products worldwide.
