Overview of Chromium Carbide Overlay Plate
Chromium carbide overlay plate is one of the most versatile wear-resistant materials currently available in today’s market. Offering excellent resistance to abrasive wear under moderate to high impact conditions, the MAStough range of chromium carbide overlay plate is available in a choice of standard sizes and thicknesses:
- 3000mm x 1500mm
- 2500mm x 1250mm
- 4000mm x 2000mm
- Thicknesses – 5mm up to 48mm
Virtually any alloy/base plate combination can be supplied with a typical overlay thickness ranging from 2mm to 17mm, and base plate thicknesses from 3mm to 30mm. Furthermore, all thicknesses can be supplied with double-sided alloy if required. The base plate is normally S235JR (St 37-2)but can be any weldable steel, including stainless as well as CrMo grades.
The wear performance of chromium carbide overlay plate is not solely a function of hardness but relies on a microstructure densely packed with primary chromium carbides. The microstructure of MAStough has been refined to offer the ideal combination of abrasion and impact resistance.
Our material has a high chrome alloy overlay with a nominal 4.5% C / 32% Cr composition with small additions of manganese and other elements, achieving a microstructure/ hardness of 60-63 HRC.

Masteel and PVSteels offer a full profiling and fabrication service, and unlike hardened mild steel, MAStough can be fabricated and bent into all manner of shapes to suit any application. Our competitive plasma profiling service can also include countersunk holes (with or without inserts), threaded holes, and plug holes. We can also supply welded studs, positioned with precision.
Fabrication – Profiling, Holes & Bending
Bending can be done without heat, which can reduce the performance of through hardened steels. Pipes and cones can be made and used as standalone structures as well as linings. The substrate of our plate can be any weldable steel, including stainless and chrome molybdenum types. Flanges and brackets can be attached to the substrate using normal fabrication techniques.
