What is Waterjet Cutting?
Waterjet cutting is an advanced manufacturing technique that uses a highly pressurised stream of water. Often, this water is combined with an abrasive substance to cut through materials with exceptional precision. Because it operates as a cold-cutting process, it avoids heat-related damage such as heat-affected zones (HAZ). As a result, this preserves the integrity of the material.
This process is driven by Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology, where computer software directs the cutting equipment. This allows for extremely accurate results and makes it possible to produce intricate and complex shapes with consistency.
The cutting action is created by forcing water through a fine nozzle at speeds reaching up to three times the speed of sound. When combined with abrasive particles, this powerful jet is capable of cutting a wide range of materials efficiently. Moreover, it does so with high accuracy.
One of the key advantages of waterjet cutting is the quality of the finished edge. Cuts are clean, smooth, and free from burrs, meaning additional finishing processes are often unnecessary. Dual Waterjet Heads and 5-Axis Capability
Our system is equipped with two cutting heads, including one with 5-axis functionality. This advanced capability enables the cutting head to move and rotate in multiple directions. Therefore, it is possible to create detailed 3D forms, angled cuts, bevels, and countersinks.
The 5-axis head also offers taper control. This ensures straight, square edges even when cutting thicker materials. In doing so, it eliminates the typical V-shaped taper.
Having dual heads allows for simultaneous cutting, increasing efficiency and output. As a result, we can deliver faster turnaround times compared to systems that operate with a single cutting head. Here at Masteel, we offer a waterjet cutting service, allowing us to offer a superior cutting quality to standard cutting methods. We have a TCI Waterjet machine, with a bed size of 6000mm x 3000mm. Our machine can cut up to 200mm thick. Additionally, it offers precise and accurate cutting (+/-0.25mm tolerances).
