What is 304H Stainless Steel?
Alloy 304/304H is a modification of chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel, which is used in many different applications. It is a versatile and cost-effective corrosion-resistant alloy which is suitable for meeting a variety of industry requirements. 304H stainless steel is made up of a combination of chromium (18%) and nickel (8%).
What are the Benefits of Using 304H Stainless Steel?
304H stainless steel has a higher carbon content than other stainless steels, being as much as 0.08% compared with 304L’s maximum of 0.03%. This means that the material has greater heat-resistance capabilities. Additionally, 304H stainless steel has a greater short and long term creep strength and a higher tensile yield strength.
Applications of 304H Stainless Steel
304H stainless steel is often used in the oil refining, gas and chemical industry and is used in industrial boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pipelines and condensers as well as throughout the power generation industry. It is also recommended for use in ASME pressure vessels which work above 525°C because of the aforementioned heat resistant properties.
304H has a diverse range of properties which is what makes it suitable for so many different industries. Its resistance to corrosion means it is suitable for use in the food industry, in particular the processing of beer, wine and dairy.
304H stainless steel’s malleability means it is easily shaped in to sinks, troughs and other kitchen appliances and can be spun easily which making it suitable for the production of pots and pans. Its workability lends itself to being welded with ease to form an airtight seal for pressure vessel plates.
304H stainless steel can also be used for architectural applications as it less costly than other stainless steel materials. It is suitable for internal cladding as well external use where it is not near a marine environment as it is not fully resistant to chloride corrosion. Otherwise, the corrosion resistance and formability of 304H stainless steel combined means it is an excellent choice for chemical containers, including where they are used for transportation.
The heat resistance of 304H stainless steel makes it optimum for heat exchangers. It has a high strength at extremely high temperatures and is not subject to stress corrosion cracking like other grades of stainless steel and it is recommended for applications where high strength is required above 500°C and up to 800°C.
304H also has tolerance for extreme thermal conditions and can be used outdoors in situations which are not easily accessible as it is a low maintenance material.
